[Armory Island - May 13, 2008] Scripts are being honed and prims aligned as programmers and builders make final preparations for this year's SL Combat Expo. The Expo opens on Armory Island within Second Life on Saturday, May 17, 2008 and runs until May 19, 2008. [Second Life is a registered trademark of Linden Labs]The Expo will feature over 25 different exhibitors of virtual weapons and combat gear located within Second Life, including U.S. Black Ops, Tyrotech, and All Worlds. It follows on from similar Expos held in 2006 and 2007.Commenting on the Expo, Apollo Case, Armory Island Owner said, "The main part of the Expo will continue to be product presentations and new product announcements related to combat in Second Life. However this year, we are taking a more outward focus, and will also include sessions on how virtual businesses can apply their virtual talents to the real world, and how they can expand their presence within Second Life."The Expo is open to real life companies that are looking for new talent to assist their virtual world presence.Apollo said, "There is a huge talent pool of programmers and builders that will be exhibiting at the Expo, and they can provide significant technical leadership for real life companies looking to build a presence within Second Life."The Expo will include entertainment and prizes, and the Expo will be opened each day by well know DJ and Second Life personality DoubleDown TandinoFull details of the program are below. Every vendor is pre-qualified for quality and reliability, and there is a broad range of virtual weapons, shields, clothing and gadgets for every avatar.*** 3rd Annual SL Combat Expo Program ***Where: Armory Island http://snurl.com/21qloWhen: May 17-19, 2008Contact: Apollo CaseMay 17 (All times SLT and subject to change)---------------------------------------------------4pm Pre-Opening Party: Hosted by DoubleDown Tandino5pm Official Opening by Apollo Case, Owner of Armory Island5:10pm-7:00pm Presentation Session One* Black Ops presentation by Grey Blankes* Aubretec Presentation by Luc Aubret* Lehane Presentation by Anthony Lehane* All Worlds and LoLSBS Presentation by Auron Prefect7:00pm-7:30pm Break7:30pm -9:00pm " Real talents applied in a Virtual World and Virtual Talents applied in the Real World " 9pm-11pm Live DJ (Cherribomb Vavoom)11:30pm-12:30am Presentation Session Two*Goliath-Enigma Presentation by Sirlor Stonecutter* Tyro Tech Presentation by Jiminy Roo* Sparrow Industries Presentation by Jacks SparrowMay 18 (All times SLT and subject to change)---------------------------------------------------4pm Pre-Opening Party: Hosted by DoubleDown Tandino5pm Official Opening by Apollo Case, Owner of Armory Island5:10pm-7:00pm Presentation Session Three* Jadsoft Presentation by jadz0r Conover* Lightfox Labs Presentation by Lightfox Ludwig* EAC Presentation by Indira Matova7pm Break7:30pm -9pm Presentation by IntLibber Brautigan, CEO, BNT "How to Organize an IPO Prospectus for your Company"9pm-11pm Live DJ (Cherribomb Vavoom)11:30pm-12:00am Presentation Session Four* Quantum Products Presentation by Darling Brody* LL Action Designs Presentation by Lienna LoweyMay 19 (All times SLT and subject to change)---------------------------------------------------4pm Pre-Opening Party: Hosted by DoubleDown Tandino5pm Official Opening by Apollo Case, Owner of Armory Island5pm-7pm Gold Vendor Presentations7:30pm-10pm Hourly Contests and Give Aways10:00pm Close of Expo

BNT Holdings has begun its Business Services operation to help promote businesses located in BNT estates, thus improving traffic and the value of land in the BNT sims. From such basics as introducing the estate to new resident businesses and their products or services, to more advanced help, such as the assistance provided to Jakesons Guitars in Venture Square helping them get their store opened, launching a grand opening party, as well as securing them an exclusive retail location in the VStarr Contests "Idol Mall" sim alongside Walmart, OMG! Inc. and other unique SL and RL retailers."As a veteran myself, I felt it was very important to help a disabled veteran build a new life and business in Second Life," said BNT CEO IntLibber Brautigan, "We put forth tremendous effort to help Jakesons get the boost and exposure they need to achieve business success in a very competitive marketplace."BNT VP of Marketing, Bethany Slade (who also oversees BNT Business Services) said, "Jakesons is an excellent example of the level of service we can provide resident businesses needing greater exposure."BNT has always themed its main sims upon an urban business setting, serving as a model for other estates seeking to emulate BNTs degree of success. BNT Business Services raises the bar among estate companies.

I stumbled across the column of In-World writer Josephina Bonetto recently and between nodding in agreement with what she had to say, found myself wanting to know more. Read our Red Light section for a taste of the Second Sex and the City.

DD: What was it that inspired you to do your personal journal in this style?JB: It was never my intention to write a personal journal at all, in any style. I always intended to write a book but kept putting it off, probably because I had ideas but I struggled to commit them to paper. I felt ineffective, frustrated and was clearly suffering from a form of writers block. I have daily in-world conversations with friends and during one of these I just came up with the idea for the Second Sex & The City column in about 30 minutes. The idea behind it was to cure my writers block by writing the column so I could finish my book. I still watch reruns and DVDs of SATC now so it was never a forgotten TV programme for me, despite ending some time ago.I suppose my style of writing has not really been changed to match "Carrie Bradshaw" because my conversational first person way of writing while posing questions is the way I speak in real life. And it is certainly the way I think. I suppose it became a tribute by accident rather than design and it was a very spontaneous, almost immediate decision of mine to write the column.DD: Did you find a lot of support right off the bat with the people In-World for this kind of "tribute"? JB: Yes. Much more than I first thought. However, in the early days of the column I felt a lot of people did not approve of my "name and shame" (now removed) and felt it was distasteful. No one ever actually said that to me directly, but I felt what I can only describe as an atmosphere - Which is a strange comment to make about a virtual world, I know. Much of that could have been me feeling particularly over sensitive at that time.Since then, people have responded more positively to my writing and I feel less self conscious about it. I am also less apologetic about it than I was at the beginning. It is a creative outlet for me, if people enjoy it that is a bonus.DD: Did you find any kind of conflict from the people in your rl because of this?JB: No, the writing is no different to any other creative hobby - Mine just happens to be based around a virtual world. My RL friends and family either support it or just don't understand what a virtual world is enough to make a comment either way. I am also a very quick writer, on a good day a column can take an hour or two at most, but I have to be in the right frame of mind to do it.DD: How often do your "column topics" find out about their role in the column?JB: I would imagine that nearly everyone has identified themselves, either because I have told them directly or I have given them a nudge in the right direction. Obviously, the male cheating virtual husband and his virtual wife know who they are. The man I refer to as Delusional Dick in one column was a member of my Second Sex & The City group as an alt and is now looking pale rather than orange so I assume he identified himself! There was no discernible fall out or feedback from the other guy I named and shamed as a cheater - He and his partner are still together I believe. I usually tell people if I am influenced by them in my columns and they usually find it funny. I do not get angry instant messages or notecards sent to me as a result of my columns, most of the dating disasters I detailed relate to men who have moved on in their game and are not interested in what I have to say, or are too offended to say anything at all perhaps!DD: Do you find your rl crossing over with your sl more then you care ?JB: Not really, I deliberately bring in snippets of RL into my columns where relevant, but I work full time in RL and have other commitments that I still continue while doing SL. I do as much or as little in-world as I want and I often find that people have a perception that I am in-world far more than I actually am because I am often AFK. I enjoy vacations from SL into RL just as much as I enjoy vacations from RL into SL.DD: With the re-vamping of the SATC myth (because of the movie) do you feel that your blog will get some new exposure?JB: I only realized this week the hype surrounding the movie as I watch surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly) very little RL TV, I knew it was imminent and the media interest was building but did not consider it at all in relation to my column until this week.I think there is the possibility that my in-world group may attract more members, but I have to confess I have been too busy in RL to check my website statistics this past couple of days to see if there are more visitors. I do not feel my column will necessarily get read more because of the movie. I think people searching on Facebook will find my group and so will people in-world, and that will be the only real impact for me from the movie.DD: Where do you see the general state of In-World relationships going?JB: I think that while there are people who insist on logging on to Second Life to recreate their miserable First Life relationships there will always be issues. I have known people who are on their third virtual marriages and others who have hired honeytraps to test their virtual partners’ fidelity. But the thing which bothers me the most is that there are people making RL plans to cross states, even water to set up RL relationships with people they have met and married in SL and their virtual partners are being unfaithful with another avatar! I want to scream “Don’t do it!”Don't get me wrong, it is not all bad news and I don't mean to give virtual relationships a bad press, but the safety of a virtual world is a myth - As soon as real feelings are stirred up there is no safety in-world anymore - Or none from hurt feelings and bruised pride anyway. It is not possible to spend a lot of time with someone in-world and not feel, there are real life personalities involved and that is where the potential for hurt and drama comes in.I think the statistics on partnering and the dissolving of partnerships in SL would be interesting to read, as I have met a few people now who are on second and third relationships in-world. I think there may be an increase in virtual "divorces", and I recently considered the possibility that pre-nuptial agreements would be of use in-world and was going to research it - So far I have not done that yet because the legal implications made my virtual head hurt.DD: How has this opened up your writing career?JB: I secured a monthly column with an online lifestyle magazine, similar in style to my own, with the first one due to be published the end of this month. I contribute articles to another online lifestyle magazine now too; the first one was about virtual nudism. They are both virtual world orientated.DD: And which SATC girl are you?JB: In real life, I am a combination of Miranda and Carrie. My creative side is more like Carrie; the cynical and sarcastic side of me is pure Miranda. I have a dry sense of humour, bordering on black at times.DD: Extra Thoughts?JB: Only that as a result of my column, I now have more opportunity to write, which was never my intention when I published it myself online but has been an interesting departure from my other in-world businesses. Really, it was a failed virtual relationship that generated more traffic to my website, www.postcardfromutopia.co.uk. As one door closed another one opened, which makes it impossible for me to feel regret, and bizarrely makes me smile sometimes. I believe in poetic justice.Photos copyright Josephina Bonetto

We have all heard about the powerful cyclone that ripped through Burma/Myanmar recently. As always, Western Aid was offered immediately. Unfortunately, due to the ‘Government’ of that country’s response, very little has reached the hundreds of thousands desperately seeking food, clean water, shelter and medicines.A friend of mine IM’d me yesterday and told me of a new way in which to help out.Gonkerplumb & Pixieplumb Flanagan (also a RL married couple) have arranged a slightly novel approach to raise funds for this worthy cause. Gonkerplumb has donned a frock in order to raise as much as possible for the ’Shelterbox’ scheme. The idea is simple, you can make a straight forward donation at the link below or you can make a donation direct to Gonkerplumb. This will result in him having to wear the dress for even longer LOL !!Already 1,000 ‘boxes’ have been sent, the first outside aid to reach the country. The Shelterbox has also been put forward to receive official Linden fundraiser status. Shelterbox is also helping out in China to deal with the most recent earthquake there. Please do what you can to support this very worthwhile scheme and keep Gonkerplumb in a frock for much longer. (I have a feeling he is starting to enjoy it, apart from sore feet standing in High Heels)They have asked me to thank everyone that has taken part and/or donated funds for this extremely important organisation. Below are more details about what a ‘Box’ consists of and the costs involved, along with a link to the Shelterbox website. I will keep you updated as to the amount raised in the near future.Make a donation – make a difference - become a 'Friend'Each ShelterBox costs an average of £490 – this includes all materials, packing, storage, transport and distribution to individual recipients worldwide.Based on a family of 10 using the box and contents for six months only this equates to 27pence per person per day!Help now!The contents of a ShelterBox will vary according to what is needed following each disaster but your donation could help buy the following:• Complete box and contents £490• Tent, groundsheets and blankets £250• Stove, cooking pots and utensils £150• Empty box and lid £25• Water containers and purification tablets £20• Tools, bag and rope £15• Axe, shovel and hoe £15• Pair of mosquito nets £8• Children’s pack £7http://www.shelterbox.org/

KABBALAH: A SECOND LIFE?

Second Life – May 4, 2008. What is Kabbalah? Why is there a resurgence of interest in this ancient wisdom that, until recently, was studied in relative secret? How does this science, as it is described, relate to the common man and to humanity? These are questions that Second Life's, ARI Online Group seek to answer for Second Lifers, providing a series of free lectures. On May 4, 2008, ARI Online conducted their second “in world” lecture, and this one included a live concert. While waiting for the performance, avatars were treated to a video featuring Real Life actor, Andrew Kenneth Martin, in which he related his personal journey to Kabbalah. Martin described a pivotal point in his life when his mother, on her death bed, summoned him to come, yet paralyzed by his own pain, was unable to go. Shortly afterwards, Martin (Second Life avatar: Akme Aeon) found a book on Kabbalah that was the link to his BB study group in Toronto, and the missing element of his life, as well.SunTzu Rikugun (Rob Taylor) opened the event with an explanation of Kabbalistic Music prior to introducing the ARI Kabbalah Band. Rikugun described the music as, “emotions captured in the expression of spiritual sensations.” Band members: guitarist, Kabbal Laville (Doug Etheridge), keyboardist, Eddy Jai Ryba (Edward Rodgers), percussionist Eu Springer (Evgeniy Strokin) and bassoonist Geoffrey Gloster (Geoffrey Best) took the stage, and immediately (even amidst technical difficulties) infused the air with the lilting, melodic sounds of the late Ba'al HaSulam.Rikugun's lecture, "Free Will-Take Life Into Your Own Hands" explored the fundamentals of Kabbalah in relationship to free will. According to Kabbalah, human beings are unable to change their essences, but are, rather, influenced by the souls around them. After the lecture Taylor answered a series of questions from the audience. The book “Kabbalah for Beginners” and links to ARI Online resources were made available for free.Ironically, Second Life appears to be the perfect venue for ARI Online to introduce Kabbalah for it seems as if Kabbalah is indeed.... a “second life!”ARI Online Group has open membership and conducts ongoing free lectures including question and answer sessions as well as concerts. The group’s next lecture is scheduled for May 18, 2008 at 6:00 PM SL time (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Fortaleza/103/14/22 ).For information about Kabbalah or to join the ARI Online Group, please IM Shlomo Oh

Chouchou. Forget razzle-dazzle, bells and whistles - this is probably one of the most unique experiences you will have in SL.Chouchou has been opened just over a month, but is already establishing itself as an extraordinary, unique cinematic experience. It is sparse, atmospheric, moody, relaxing, transporting. A place for contemplation on a deep level.Creator juliet Heberle and her partner arabesque Choche have succeeded, with their friend Yuki Aabye, in bringing beauty and emotion together in a way that leaves plenty of scope for your own interpretation of the space."This is our concept sim," juliet told me as we sat in the vast expanse of Chouchou. "We created it to express our world." (We, by the way, is juliet and her partner arabesque). Both are Japanese, with arabesque being half-European and spending some time in Austria and juliet having spent ten years in New York. "We are Chouchou, a music group in SL. I'm a singer and lyricist and arabesque is the composer and pianist."juliet explained that the inspiration for the Chouchou sim came while she was writing lyrics for one of their songs ("rafflesia"). "It gave me visions of white sands, dying trees, a bird and a cage. So I ask my friend Yuki Aabye, who is a great creator in SL, to help put my visions into shapes, while arabesque did the composing. Yuki used to have an amazing place called 'Rez', but he gave it up. I hope someday we can see it again. It was made with lots of gears".juliet and Yuki also collaborated on creating Islamey, where Chouchou concerts are held throughout the month. "Before we have this place, we were renting land somewhere else, and we had Islamey there," explained juliet. "So Islamey is our first creation."Islamey is Chouchou's concert area on the sim. (You get to Islamey by touching the ladder and being gently 'swirled' upstairs). This is another magnificent space - completely different to the starkness below and one that changes with the seasons. It's more ethereal, soft and gentle. I've been there several times and always there are people there, quietly taking it all in.When I asked juliet what kind of responses she'd had to the sim, she said she was at first worried about people's reaction to it. "For us, it's perfect and completed. This is it. Nothing should be added or subtracted. But people in SL tend to love something very complicated. But despite what I was thinking, lots of people say they love this place."I'd been curious about the symbolism of the items scattered throughout the 'wasteland', but juliet said she would prefer to leave interpretation to other people's imagination. In this way, people can fill in the spaces themselves. On my first visit, I admit to thinking, "Well, there isn't much to it" and found myself yearning for more 'stuff'. Stuff to look at. Things to experience. But then I realised that thinking like that meant I didn't "get it" ... Chouchou is NOT about stuff and activity. It's about connecting. Connecting with your own thoughts and feelings. What did captivate me though was feeling that I was in Doctor Zhivago. A grand canvas.juliet, began her SL life as a DJ on the Japanese radio programme, "Little Tiara". She and arabesque, who have known one for four years, formed the musical group 'Chouchou' in July 2007 after arabesque suggested that she sing on her radio programme. That became their first song "utakata.""We have very similar perspectives for everything," she pointed out. "What I like, is what he likes. What I see, is what he sees." What they have achieved together, she sees as the ultimate collaboration.I asked what juliet hoped people would take away from the Chouchou sim. "Memory," she replied simply. "This place is like a place you see for the first time, but at the same time, this is a place you've seen before. The place deep in your mind. Deep memory. If this place reminds people of something pure and nostalgic in their deep mind, I'd be more than happy. Coming here is not like visiting a place. It is like looking into your inner world. This is the place to talk to yourself."juliet explained that everything on Chouchou is to her specifications, although it was Yuki who had actually designed the logo and created the 'look' of the island. "I've loved everything he creates," she enthused. "It's my idea, and I tell him how I want it to look."I have all the visions for creating our spaces first, but I share those visions with Yuki. And he sometimes comes up with great ideas and suggestions. It's like this...I told him, "I'm thinking about placing something like black stairs, but every style I tried stood out too much, and it can't stand out more than a tree. it must harmonize with it." Then he told me, "What about a ladder?" he showed me a ladder, and I asked him to pile them all the way up to the sky. When I look at it, I thought, "This is it." Then I placed debris around it as if they fell from the sky. I placed a cage, feathers and piano. And I created and placed the huge black whirl to go with the scene. He placed a tree and a beautiful black flower. I edited terrain to look like the little land rose to the surface of the vast ocean. We always collaborate like this.On arrival at Chouchou, the first thing to do is turn your music on and be immediately captivated by arabesque's piano playing. The next step is to click on the black flower in front of you to get your free cinematic HUD. Take some time to fiddle around with your preferences - (take 'em all the way up to maximum) and then play around with lighting options under WORLD and ... Have a bit of a read of the notecard provided and just head off in whatever direction takes your fancy. Some people may not feel entirely comfortable with the way your avatar moves away from you and into the distance. Your view floats and flows and several people I took there, found this an uncomfortable feeling - disorienting. And of course, it all depends on how 'buggy' SL is on any given occasion. But take it slow and just let it move you where it will. The trick is just to go with the flow.Anyone wanting to get a sneak peak of the Chouchou sim, can do so on their latest video - http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=b8B1MGW64fg or if you would like to check out their music, you can do that at - http://www.myspace.com/chouchouholicBy Guest Writer Miralee Munro

Jule Arida home in YujaThe quietest lovely home of my dear friend and adopted brother. Jule has built this quiet repose , a lovely place to come and reflect of days gone by. To seek what is lying in the future, to dance in the moonlight, to swim in the sea.I wander the hills, what do I find? A ghost town! Yes complete with a saloon, a store for the adventurous gold and silver seeker. To visit the steepled little Church is a humbling experience on this beautiful piece of land. Complete with a ghost rising from the ground. Fear not my friends she comes to smile upon you as you search her grounds. What is her story? I have yet to find the answers. I stand in awe in the hot air balloon, I drift with the winds:He is my protector while I dwell alone on this land. He romps and plays while we wait; Wait for what?A tall handsome Duke who found me staring across the waves, he stood in silence lest he was afraid I would be frightened. Startled a bit, but not frightened, a bit wary to say the least. Smiling now, remembering those days have long since past. What I am trying to tell you all is that in this Second Life you can find the most amazing people.Jule had sent this duke to make sure that Bree was safe, as she stood there for the longest time wondering what life had in store for her.I found a lovely long lasting friendship with these two men which continues into real life, we may never ever meet in the real world but talking thru voice and email and written cards across the seas makes life a truly beautiful place for Bree.I have found many such friends and have loved every minute of it. so get out there explore this new found life, take your time , it isn't always easy, but what in life can always be easy?If they stick with you you have found life's rewards.Breezes
